The Human Condition (2009)

Exhibited: BTEC Final Show, University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury, June 2009.
[timber, perspex, acrylic paint].

The Human Condition is a homage to Magritte’s series of the same name. It comprises a materialisation of, and play on, the easel in one of his paintings (see bottom image) and functions in a similar way, pretending the role of the painted canvas interjecting in the observer's gaze. Here however, it does so as a fully materialised object, effectively challenging the viewer's perception by causing it to oscillate between representation and the real.
